METHOD

How we assess an asset

Four criteria organise the acquisition decision, and explain the portfolio's current composition.

    Counter-cyclical reading

    The acquisition decision does not follow the commodity price cycle. The company assesses assets when the market has lost interest in them, which lowers the entry cost and lengthens the maturation horizon. It is the reading that has defined the portfolio since 1998, and the one that best explains its current composition.

  2. 02

    High-grade ore in a smaller mine

    Rather than competing for large deposits, Atlântica invests in smaller mines whose ore has high technical quality. Smaller size reduces the capital needed to unlock the asset; high quality sustains the price of the product at the end of the chain.

  3. 03

    Vertically integrated operation

    Processing stays inside the company's own structure. Delivering raw ore passes the margin to the next link in the chain; keeping processing preserves that margin and gives control over the specification industrial buyers require.

  4. 04

    Logistics before acquisition

    A mineral asset is worth what logistics allow it to ship. Clusters are assessed by their access to road corridors, rail terminals and export ports. Distance and transport mode enter the calculation before the decision, alongside grade and volume.
